Personal Stylist Advice: What To Wear On A Valentine’s Date

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, guys start taking a serious look at their style; making sure it’s on point for the extreme pressure that is a February 14th first date. “Are my jeans too tight? Will this t-shirt show my sweat stains? Could someone fall in love with a man who wears odd socks?” A whole plethora of nonsense questions run through our minds when it comes to attracting a partner through our outfits, which is why we’ve recruited the help of personal stylist Cara Tomlinson to offer advice on what men should wear for a Valentine’s date, covering situations from Netflix & Chill to Michelin Star restaurants.

We’re staying in and cooking something special for our date. What should we wear?

“If you’re staying in for Valentine’s Day with a takeaway, bottle of wine and Netflix, comfort is key. Obviously PJs are fine, and when I say fine I mean a cop out. So make a bit of an effort by looking like you’ve taken a lot of time to put the look together. Go for a smart meets sporty look like the navy smart track co-ord paired with a simple tee.”

What should a guy wear on a first date somewhere casual like a bar?

Leather jacket…check. Cool shirt, sleeves rolled up, unbuttoned a few…check. For the bottom half, I’ve paired the black ripped jeans to add a bit of depth. For places like bars your shoe choice says everything and first impressions are a deal breaker. Try to stay clear of trainers, especially if they are a bit worse for wear and go for Chelsea boots. Now for accessories add some jewellery; a pendant or a few chunky rings. Just maybe leave the rock n roll attitude at home.”

What should a guy wear on a first date to somewhere a bit upmarket?

“If you’re going somewhere fancy that has a strict smart dress code, or you just want to dress up keep the look tailored and polished, go for clean cuts and a simple colour palette of Black, White, Grey and Navy, as these are a failsafe option that you can never go wrong with. If you don’t want to do the full suit thing, try pairing a blazer with a different pair of checked tailored trousers or a pair or dark jeans. Go for a classic top option like a crisp shirt or a piece of smart knitwear. To pull this look together match your watch with your belt and shoes. Stone macs are a good coat to layer on top of your outfit to keep you warm in this February weather, but to also keep you looking suave. There are so many different variations of this smart tailored look that the options are endless. If you take any of this advice, try to keep the silhouettes clean and make sure the tailoring fits you right – the oversized, two sizes too big look can be left in the ’80s. And bursting from the seams like the Hulk isn’t a good look either.”
