11 Unexpected Gifts to Give on Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day just around the corner (31st March, for those asking), we thought we’d give you a helpful gifting nudge.

This year we’ve been inspired by gifts that are a little different… gifts that mothers probably won’t expect. From afternoon tea where Meghan Markle stayed the night before her Royal wedding to a hamper of all-vegan chocolate for the health-kickers, here are our 11 gifts that put the ‘other’ into Mother’s Day.

1. Design your own perfume with Red Letter Days

Fed up of buying your mum the same perfume every year, but don’t know where to start when it comes to looking for a new one? Red Letter Days has a spot-on experience where your mum can go and design her own perfume instead. Go with her (it’s for men, too) for a bonding day out or gift it to her and a friend for a day of prosecco and perfume.

Obtainable at a whole bunch of locations across the country, The Perfume Studio’s well-thought-through experience is a great way for your mum to express her individuality. She’ll be talked through the makings of great perfume as well as all the scents that are available, from base to top notes. She’ll be able to filter and pick through the scents, combining just one or all of the 21 available to make her own personalised perfume to take home.

Take a look at The Perfume Studio’s website for take-home perfume sets, and keep an eye on Red Letter Days to book this experience (and so many others).

2. The gift of Raspberry Ripple Gin

As if gin couldn’t get any better. Willy Wonker-esque Michelle spent many a day in her kitchen cooking up a recipe she wanted to see on shelves, and we’re so glad she did.

Even if your mum isn’t a gin fanatic, there’s no way she won’t love this. If one gin isn’t enough, why not try out some of Shelly’s other gin flavours of Fig, Vanilla and Cardomon or Manchester Tart (a combination of raspberry, custard and cherry) or her innovative creation of Rumbard (a rhubarb rum). “There’s something for all mums, from the fun ice cream float with the Raspberry Ripple to the unusually spiced Fig, Vanilla and Cardamom gin-based spirit drink’, creator Michelle says. Here’s how she suggests serving:

Raspberry Ripple Gin: Serve over lots of ice with fresh Raspberries and either lemonade (for a sweeter taste) or a floral tonic. Make it unique with a blob of vanilla ice cream. Fill glass with ice, add a 50ml shot of Raspberry Ripple and top with 100/150mls of lemonade/tonic.

Fig Vanilla & Cardamom Gin: For the perfect serve, pour a 50ml shot of Fig Vanilla and Cardamom in your glass with either floral tonic or lemonade for a sweeter taste. Add ice and garnish with fresh fig slices.

Manchester Tart Gin: Best served with lots of ice, add 50mls of Manchester tart and 100/150mls of light tonic, elderflower tonic or lemonade. Garnish with cherries or fresh raspberries.

Rumbarb: Serve in a tumbler with oversized ice and ginger ale. Garnish with fresh ginger and rhubarb ribbons.

With no artificial flavours, allergens or nuts and suitable for vegans, from branding to flavour, there’s nothing not to love about Shelly’s Drinks.

Shop on Shelly’s Drinks, Master of Malt or at a Booths supermarket.

3. Motcombs Restaurant

If dinner with a touch of Jazz is just what the doctor ordered, Motcombs is here to give you just that (and lots of cocktails, too).

Based in Belgravia (amongst the opulent houses of Kensington), Motcombs is a well-kept delight. But what you might not initially see are the secret stairs leading down into the depths of their new Supper Club. With a separate menu, the Supper Club is exotic and refined with choices of the most wonderful culinary creations we’ve had the pleasure of trying.

Menu highlights include their miniature ‘garden’ of a truffle mayonnaise base, dried olives creating the ‘soil’ and miniature tomatoes, carrots and tiny cucumelons giving off a vegetable patch vibe with incredible flavours we can’t even begin to describe. There are fish and meat options – both cooked to perfection – that will leave you and your mum satisfyingly full. For dessert, baked Alaska is the showstopper: whipped marshmallow encases mango sorbet as it’s presented to you in a burst of colourful flames.

To enjoy the live jazz, make sure you visit the Supper Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (and book with enough time to secure your Mother’s Day spot).

4. Wyld Home Faux Flowers

We’ve heard it too many times: “but why would you want flowers if they’re only going to die in a week’s time?”. Not anymore, guys. No excuses now…

Wyld Home’s range of faux flowers is one of our best discoveries – flowers that look perfect now and still will not just weeks but years down the line. Don’t be fooled by the ‘faux’, though. We couldn’t believe just how real these flowers felt (our top tip? Give them a spray to make them smell just as good as they look). From single sprays of white flowers and trailing greens to potted cactus’ and bouquets, these flowers and plants require minimum effort with no watering needed, ever.

If you’re stuck for inspiration, Wyld Home has created a unique bouquet designed with mothers in mind: The Radbrook Bouquet (each bouquet is named after a place in Wyld Home’s hometown of Shrewsbury). This bouquet boasts blush roses, white cosmos and bags of green foliage – a combination she’ll love that’ll lighten up any room. If you know what your mum loves but can’t find the arrangement, give Wyld Home a call and Krystyna will help you create your very own, custom display. They’re elegant, they’re easy, and they’re here for the long run. She’ll love it.

Feast your eyes on the Wyld Home website for all of this (and more!).

5. Shop Topshop

Give the gift of Topshop this Mother’s Day. From a range of trend-setting clothes to staple accessories, ensure she’ll see the year through in style.

If you’re not sure what she’s in to, go safe with a gift card instead. Until then, take a look at our top picks below.

6. Afternoon Tea at Cliveden House

Because all mums deserve to feel like royalty, treat her to an afternoon tea at Cliveden House – the place Meghan Markle stayed before her Royal wedding.

Located in the Berkshire countryside, the Grade 1 listed Cliveden House sits on 376 acres of National Trust grounds. A hotel, restaurant and spa, this Mother’s Day, why not spoil her rotten? To celebrate the occasion, book in an afternoon tea for quality bonding time over a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with home-made jam and clotted cream, miniature bite-size cakes and pastries all washed down with your choice of tea or champagne. Book up soon to ensure you have a day you’ll both remember in years to come.

Find out more on the Cliveden House website.

7. The Curl Bar by Hot Tools

Hair care tends to be one of the most burdening things in a woman’s life – so much to do in such little time. This Mother’s Day, we’ve hunted down one of the easiest hair products to give your mum her bounce back.

The CurlBar by Hot Tools is a new, innovative hair curling device that’s user-friendly with a touch of luxury. Designed at a 90-degree right angle for incredibly easy use, this handy hair device eliminates those awkward arms aches trying to reach each strand of hair that your mum will be all too familiar with.

Give your mum her time back as she does her hair better and quicker than ever with results that she’ll be ecstatic with (and take some brownie points for yourself). Oh, and don’t forget the finishing touch that she won’t be quick to forget – the Curlbar heat plate has a 24k Gold surface making this tool high-tech and high-end (and for only a fraction of the price). Available in two sizes of 25mm (for tighter curls) and 32mm (for looser curls), there’s an option for all desired styles.

Explore more of the CurlBar and Hot Tools on their website.

8. The Dafni Allure Cordless Straightening Brush

We’ve done curly… now for straight.

It’s time to prick up your ears as Dafni hair has taken its classic, sell-out straightening brush to a whole new level… it’s gone cordless! Like all good things (thanks, Dyson), cordless is the new way of living (you’ll never want to go back). Fuss-free and on the go, always, the new (and first, ever, may we add) Dafni Allure is here to make waves.

One for mothers with unruly hair, or busy mothers who simply don’t have the time to faff, this Dafni device is small enough to fit in a handbag and easy enough to use anywhere. Coming with a heat-protective pouch, your mum can keep the cordless straightening brush in her bag at all times to cover those SOS moments (she’ll thank you for that).

So, how does it work? Like a normal brush, the Dafni Allure has bristles. Unlike any normal brush, these bristles are actually mini heated plates that straighten hair when run through (with no-pull technology) until the frizz has gone. The Dafni Allure needs to be charged up around every three uses – but that gives plenty of time to whack it out for emergencies.

To see more of the Dafni Allure, check out the Dafni Hair website.

9. The Vegan Larder

One for all the vegan mums out there – The Vegan Larder has just launched something spectacular (and we’re really excited about it)

The Gourmet Chocolate Box is The Vegan Larder’s new venture, bringing the plant-based lovers of the world their favourite treats straight to their doors. Each box includes a hand-picked selection of sweet products from truffles and salted caramel biscuits to wagon wheels. Supporting small producers, your mum will be introduced to brands she may not have seen before but will be sure to have again – all 100% vegan. If you have a lot of vegans in your family, this is a great way to conquer Easter, too! (And if you don’t, these treats are delicious either way)

Whilst you’re here, if you fancy making your mum feel extra special this Mother’s Day, take a look at The Vegan Larder’s website for a plethora of vegan recipes. It’s also worth visiting their online shop, full of carefully selected vegan products covering every food type.

10. Tom Daxon, Magnolia Heights

Tom Daxon is a perfumer at the heights of luxury. We teamed up with Tom Daxon himself to find the perfect perfume for Mother’s Day gifting.

“Don’t fixate on the fact you’re buying for someone of the opposite sex”, Tom tells us. “It’s an irrelevance and you’ll fall into the trap of buying a fragrance purely because it looks the most ‘feminine’. We market all Tom Daxon fragrances as unisex and they’re equally popular with men and women which goes to show you can just trust your own taste and knowledge of the person you’re buying for. If you know they have a favourite fragrance or note then that’s a great starting point for a sales assistant to help you.”

We ventured off and, after much deliberation, settled on the Magnolia Heights fragrance. Light, warming and with just a little sweetness (because mums are sweet enough, right?), this bottle is our scent of choice. Trust our judgement or take a trip to a Tom Daxon stockist to discover your own.

Explore the Tom Daxon website for plenty of inspiration.
