10 Food & Drink Centric Things To Do In October Because That’s What Life Is About

October is officially here which means summer is well and truly over (RIP those 3 sunny days we had). But there’s a whole host of cool events happening across the UK to help you ease into autumn. From smuggling booze into a prison-themed pop-up bar to an entire festival dedicated to the mighty burger; we called on our friends at DesignMyNight to shed some light on this month’s best events.

Get ready; October’s gonna be a big one.

Brixton Oktoberfest – London

Nearly every venue is celebrating Oktoberfest this month (and why wouldn’t they), but Brixton Rooftop’s three-day event is up there with the best. Promising to bring the best of Bavaria and Berlin to the heart of Brixton, you can expect plenty of delicious bratwursts from Herman Ze German and steins filled with everything from beer to cocktails and prosecco. Entertainment wise; there will bier stein pong, live oompah bands and wait for it – a Berlin-themed techno room.

But what we’re most looking forward to is the meat packed sharing platter found at one of Herman’s many London locations, featuring their trademark pork and veal Bratwurst, a slice of smoked German Pork Belly, a handmade Pork Schnitzel and a tasty piece of Käserkreainer – that’s some smoked pork filled with delicious melted cheese. Good thing it’s time to bulk up for winter.

Alcotraz – London

Familiar with Shawshank Redemption and Orange Is the New Black? Well forget them; there’s a new prison-themed favourite in town and it’s this London pop-up. Located on Brick Lane, convicts will be given an inmate number and an orange jumpsuit, before spending a couple of hours locked behind bars at Alcotraz. All is not as it seems though. You’ll have the opportunity to smuggle your spirit of choice past the warden of the jail, where a mixologist will whip you up criminally-good drinks during your stay.

Silent Disco VS Retro Gaming – London

REZtron is a Japanese-style retrogaming pop-up, and they’re back with their annual shindig, but this time around they’re pulling out all the stops. Taking place at the Chelsea Harbour Hotel, expect penthouse views of London as you play classic games on retro CRT TVs and massive projector screens. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s gonna be a silent disco afterwards and a karaoke booth if you’re brave enough to show off your vocal skills to the masses.

Heist Bank Beer Festival – London

Heist Bank in Paddington are throwing their first ever two-day beer festival on the 14th, and if you’re in the business of trying out rare brews, it’s in your best interests to head down. The likes of Beavertown, Fourpure, Wild Beer Co, and Thornbridge will be headlining, alongside 30 odd breweries from the UK and beyond. There will be over 100 types of beer on offer as well as collaborative brews, talks, and workshops. Tickets are £15 and you’ll get one food and two beer tokens when you arrive.

The Casino Royale Ball – London

Looking for an excuse to buy a new suit this month? The Roof Gardens are hosting a Casino Royale Ball, and it’s the perfect opportunity to channel your inner Bond. Organised by the Late Night Cocktail Club, you can expect an extravagant array of entertainment in the form of fire-eaters, electro swing DJs, saxophonists, ballerinas and racy burlesque dancers. If you’re feeling lucky, make your way over to the roulette table with a cocktail in hand and put on your best poker face. If you book your tickets through the above link and enter the discount code ‘TOPMAN’, you’ll get 25% off your tickets.

Brum’s Big Fat Burger Festival – Birmingham

What’s better than a burger? Absolutely nothing. Birmingham street food masters, Taste & Liquor, have rolled up their sleeves this October to organise a burger feast like no other, and you have to go. Over ten traders will be in attendance, all of them whipping up the tastiest sliders and dribble-worthy sides going. Expect a tonne of themed bars, enough craft beer to sink a small boat and live music from Brum’s best bands and DJs. There will be plenty of meat-free options available too if you’re a keen vegetarian.

Urban Axe Throwing – Manchester

Looking for a healthy (and satisfying) way to blow off some steam? The guys at Whistle Punks have just the thing: Urban Axe Throwing. Masterful ‘throwing coaches’ will be on hand to pass on their expertise, so you can nail your technique and aim your axe at the bullseye. Once you’re confident enough – and if they’re willing to take you on – go head-to-head with your mates in a tournament.

Oktoberfest Beer and Food Night – Glasgow

Oktoberfest isn’t all about guzzling as much beer as you can whilst yelling ‘prost!’. It’s also a great chance to get to grips with authentic grub. Take time out of your diary on the 3rd and visit the Bavarian banquet at The Bungo in Glasgow. You’ll be working your way through eight authentic beers paired with five courses of traditional food. Highlights include meatball burgers on pretzel buns with Bavarian smoked cheese and pork knuckle slow roasted in beer with mini bratwurst and seasoned shoestring fries. The best part? It’ll only set your wallet back £30.

Heavensteak Kitchen Pop-Up – Liverpool

If you consider yourself a meat-lover, you need to head to Heavensteak Kitchen’s Pop-Up at Coast Cafe Bistro in Liverpool. They’ll be putting on a three-course dinner this month, where you’ll get to choose from a tender beef steak or one of their signature exotic meats (kangaroo or buffalo) for your main. The starters and desserts are equally amazing; choose from haggis parcels with mozzarella, and bacon crêpes with homemade chocolate sauce.

Manchester Brewery Tour – Manchester

If you’re a self-confessed beer junkie, you need to organise an outing for the Manchester Microbrewery Walking Tour. Not only will you discover gems along the Piccadilly Beer Mile, but you’ll also get a behind the scenes peek into the magic behind making your favourite brews and you’ll get to taste them too. The first stop will be Beer Nouveau, where you’ll get a brewery tour and a lesson into hops and grains, followed by the lively Alphabet Brewery’s taproom, where there will be cracking DJ sets and grub from the weekly food festival. Your night will end at UNIT101, where you’ll enjoy a few top beers to finish your beer-fuelled experience.
