10 THINGS YOU THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER WEAR
Fashion is full of surprises. It’s pretty speedy too. Each season sees the re-emergence of a style that fell out of fashion-favour decades ago. If at first we raise our eyebrows, it’s usually only a matter of weeks before we’re giving it a go ourselves.
With this in mind, we’ve pulled together our top 10 items that until recently you could never imagine yourself wearing, but you now can’t live without.
Ah, remember the heady days of Brit Pop – loads of fringes, Oasis vs Blur, Union Jack flags on everything possible – it was a great time for music and a great time for style. During that period, the only headwear worth wearing was the bucket hat…and it’s making its comeback tour this summer.
Tropical motifs are everywhere this summer, from swimwear to shorts to accessories – but the true master of the tropics is the Hawaiian shirt. Experiment with introducing one into your smart casual wardrobe – tuck it into white chinos, or layer it (unbuttoned) under a relaxed blazer.
Peace, love and tie dye – the three seem to go hand-in-hand. This summer, channel the freewheeling hippie vibe of 1969’s Woodstock Festival by adding a tie dye tee to your festival look – wear it with cut-off denim shorts and round-framed sunglasses.
There’s nothing wrong with showing a bit of a thigh. Diego Maradona and 1980s football kit manufacturers both had the right idea when it came to hemlines – and, judging by recent menswear shows, short shorts are now fully acceptable on the beach, in town or even at work.
If bumbags remind you of school trips, Mr Motivator and your dad on holiday, then it’s time to re-evaluate this most practical of fashion accessory. This summer, don’t be surprised if bumbags and crossbody bags become the standout accessory of the festival season.
Over the last few years, there have been very few looks more derided than double denim, which means – you guessed it – it’s now back on trend! The key is to ignore the denim styling tips of mid-nineties boy bands, and to look back at classic style icons such as Steve McQueen – something clearly noted by Kaiser Chiefs frontman, Ricky Wilson.
Joggers have taken a rather languid leap from being classed as loungwear only, to being accepted as a welcome alternative to jeans, chinos and even smart trousers. No longer for the sofa only, this season style your joggers with a shirt, bomber jacket and smart sneakers.
I bet I know what you’re picturing: middle aged man, beige socks, and a velcro-fastening monstrosity of a sandal. It’s time to expunge that image from your brain. Instead, take note of this season’s rather splendid sandal offering – think minimal styles worn with ankle-grazing formal trousers.
Leggings for men, who would have thought it, ey? Well, the fact is they look great, they’re supremely comfortable and they tick the ‘sports-luxe’ box like no other item. Nail the look with our 2-in-1 shorts and meggings set, wear them with a simple tee or vest – and just a add a bomber or a biker jacket in the evenings.
Originally sported by bikers, hip-gyrating rockstars and Ross from Friends (albeit in just one episode), leather trousers are having a surprisingly resurgent summer – they often appear in the top sellers on Topman.com. Perhaps we have Jared Leto to thank, the movie star is regularly spotted in leather legwear. Cheers Jared.
