    Last October, Topman’s secret, appointment only styling studio opened on Melrose, a tiny outpost of British cool. Interest grew by word of mouth. It popped up on blogs, in the press, and its team of stylists quickly began booking in a regular clientele – dedicated to the art of

    looking awesome.

    Personal stylist Dan Moody works between the Melrose studio and Topman’s LA flagship at The Grove. Having worked as a stylist in Topman’s NYC store, he’s one happy transplant, having swapped Brooklyn and his Metrocard for the sunnier

    climes of LA and a three-year lease on a new set of wheels.

    “As soon as I knew we were opening in LA, I started to ask all my Californian clients in New York what it was like. They said I’d either hate it or love it – and I’m loving it. It’s totally different.”

    With a roster of up-and-coming and established actors, celebs and musical acts, Dan guides each client through not only the latest Topman trends, but what would suit them, their personality. “There’s a real interest in style here,” he explains, “they want that rock and roll vibe, but overall they want to look like ‘I don’t care, but I do.’”

    The complimentary service comes in three packages. First up is Express, a 30-minute style fix. Call ahead for a selection of items ready for you to try on, or hit the

    shop floor with Dan to hunt out what you need.

    The one-hour Edit is a key style update, a 101 class in this season’s key styles, or an opportunity to piece together the perfect outfit for a special occasion or big night out. Finally, there’s the two-hour Experience. This is the big one - a total wardrobe overhaul with full outfits, down to the perfect pair of jeans, tees and sneakers to upscale workwear, occasion wear, and casual suiting. Dan will share his insider’s knowledge of the key pieces you’ll need for the season, and you’ll be able to build a wearable edit of clothing picked with you in mind.

    With Topman’s store opening at The Grove, there is a new outpost of London style in California. In the spirit of friendly competition, we asked two young photographers, one from London and another from LA, to show us how they see their home town

    Young fathers and dip-dyed girls, Vietnamese teens, a Bengali MC and east London as seen from the top of a bus: photographer James Pearson-Howes’ unique skew on the city is all about hidden communities, youth, and what it means to be British. He’s just finished a major commercial project, and shoots for Vice, Inventory, Time Out and street style for Japanese mag Free & Easy. So, what’s the best neighbourhood to see London style on the street? “All the youth up in Dalston, I love all that stuff,” says James. “I bumped into this guy the other day – he had bleach-blonde eyebrows and a little toy dog on a lead. That’s the great thing about London – everyone’s free to do what they want.”

    Mike Piscitelli was born in the San Fernando Valley, and it was skate culture and hardcore music that lured him out of the suburbs and into the heart of LA. Duties include shooting celeb portraits, music videos (for the likes of Iggy Pop & Linkin Park), and projects for titles like i-D Magazine and Dazed & Confused. Surf stunts, off-duty celebs and the freckled young groupies of skatepark meets all make up Mike’s LA – specifically Venice – where “everyone seems to dress like a lumberjack, or in skate wear, it’s a bit of a uniform.” He says you have to know where to look to uncover the city’s best bits. “There’s great stuff going on in LA, it’s just really hard to find.”
