“A good jacket is the statement piece in the armoury of the well-dressed man. It’s more than a necessity”, so says Topman Personal Shopper (and exceptionally stylish guy), Daniel Rhone. With spring on the horizon, we asked Daniel to select his five essential jackets for the season. These are classic staples with a modern update, handpicked with longevity and value for money in mind.
1. NAVY WOOL BLEND HARRINGTON JACKET
You can't get any more classic than a Harrington jacket, especially dressed-up with a crisp white shirt or dressed-down with a cable knit jumper. It's deep navy colouring gives you the freedom to be a little bit more expressive with your colours – try pairing it with maroon or jewel tones, or, if you favour a lighter shade, go for pale blue or cream.
2. BLACK LEATHER BIKER JACKET
The classic leather biker is given a contemporary update in the form of this slick jacket. The minimal detailing and clean leather finish allows you to be a bit more daring with your styling, although personally I'd recommend a classic white or black tee underneath for an understatedly cool look.
3. PETROL BLUE DENIM JACKET
The denim jacket is a bit of a taboo item with of a lot of guys. It shouldn't be though, it’s actually a really versatile piece – it looks just as good layered under a coat in winter as it does thrown over a Henley tee during summer. Gentlemen wanting a denim jacket hero, take note of Ryan Gosling in Drive (yep, that’s right – he rocks more than just that bomber).
4. GREY TEXTURED MAC
Fit is essential and can make or break an outfit. Luckily this beautiful Topman light grey mac has a cut so sharp you won't want to take it off once you’re indoors. Because of its light colouring, I would style with a stronger shade underneath to create a contrasting outfit. I’d pair it with a Topman premium roll neck in burgundy for the desired look.
5. BLACK WOOL BOMBER
Texture has been an integral part of menswear over the past few years, with individual pieces being made up from a combination of different fabrics and feels. With this trend bombers have evolved into a smartwear jacket, so I’d pair this luxury black wool style with cropped trousers and a roll neck jumper for a contemporary sartorial outfit.
