Unless you’ve been living under a rock without Wi-Fi, you may have noticed us talking about new season trends lately. We recruited some fine looking chaps to show you how to wear AW15’s biggest looks, but sometimes you need the regular guys on the street to show you how to wear them (we don’t all have imploding cheekbones, y’know). Which is why we’ve scouted out the best in this year’s street style to demonstrate how to wear modern 70s, new utility, camel and smarten down.
We’ve taken the best part of the glam rock era (fringe jackets, ringer tees, shearling coats) and kept the embarrassing parts hidden (platforms, sequin suits, the Bee Gees). It’s called ‘modern’ because of the way you style it; you don’t have to go full 70s e.g. wear a ringer with black ripped skinny jeans and some trainers rather than with an afro and porn star moustache.
Military was cool, but it’s now been adopted by spotty teenage Camden-ites who have just discovered the Libertines. Which is why for AW15 we’ve updated it to new utility. Gone are the days of shiny buttons and regal coats, now it’s all about masculine workwear shirts with extra pockets and khaki combat jackets that take inspiration from the great outdoors.
Although the days are getting darker, the colour of the moment is a lot lighter. Camel – and various shades of it – are featuring in everything from capes to smart headwear to t-shirts. But for a classic standout statement, invest in a camel overcoat as your main winter layer. You can pull it out year after year because it never goes out of style.
The idea of wearing joggers with a blazer sounds quite preposterous on the surface; like something a teen with an ASBO would wear to court. But reworking casual items into more formal outfits is cool – and extremely comfy. Expect to see tailored joggers, elasticated waists on smart co-ords and teaming trainers with suits.
